Rompetrol Brings AED Cabinets to Romania's Fuel Stations
A major private-sector investment in public cardiac safety
Rompetrol, in partnership with the SMURD Foundation, has completed the installation of semi-automatic AED cabinets across 80 fuel stations in Romania, plus 11 public locations across Constanța and Prahova counties. The total investment exceeds one million Romanian lei.
“Placing AED cabinets in our stations creates a major advantage in critical situations.”
Cardiac arrest does not wait for a hospital to be nearby. With tens of thousands of people passing through Rompetrol's nationwide network every day, the company saw a clear opportunity: transform high-traffic locations into life-saving access points. The AED cabinets have been installed at stations along national roads, busy commuter routes, and motorways — precisely where people are most likely to be far from emergency care when a cardiac event strikes.
The project extends beyond the fuel station network. In Prahova County, six AED cabinets have been placed in heavily frequented public spaces — public institutions, markets, and recreational areas — in collaboration with Ploiești City Hall. Five additional locations in Constanța County have also been equipped. All Rompetrol station staff across the network have received specialist training in AED use and first aid.
The initiative builds on 16 years of collaboration. Rompetrol and the SMURD Foundation have worked together since 2009 — one of Romania's most enduring public-private partnerships in health and emergency preparedness — delivering training equipment, pre-hospital apparatus, fuel for the emergency fleet, and upgrades to operational bases nationwide.
"Every minute before medical crews arrive is essential — rapid access to an AED saves lives." — Dr. Raed Arafat, SMURD Foundation
All installed AED locations can be found on the Department for Emergency Situations app and on the Fii Pregătit platform.
At Rotaid, we are proud to see partners like the SMURD Foundation expand the reach of reliable AED infrastructure. Building heartsafe communities takes exactly this kind of long-term commitment — and Romania is showing what becomes possible when the private sector steps up.
