Bendigo Bank Brings Heart-Safe Communities to Australia
Over 500 AEDs funded for communities across Australia
endigo Bank's Community Bank model has reached a landmark milestone: more than 500 defibrillators have been funded, supplied and installed across Australia, from surf clubs and sporting venues to schools and shopping centres. Working alongside Staying Alive Health, the exclusive Australian distributor of the Rotaid 24/7 cabinet, the programme is now pushing towards AED coverage for hundreds more communities that need it most.
“We've been able to supply these vital lifesaving devices to communities right across Australia.”
Sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of around 100 Australians every day. Nine in ten victims cannot be revived without immediate help from a bystander, and every minute without defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to ten percent. In many communities across Australia, the nearest AED is simply too far away, or not accessible at all outside business hours. Bendigo Bank's Community Bank model has been working to close that gap, funding the supply and installation of defibrillators in the places where people already gather: sports clubs, shopping centres, walking trails, schools and local branches.
Founded in 1998, the Community Bank model was built to keep banking services accessible in rural and smaller metropolitan communities. The network has grown to more than 300 branches and has returned over $366 million to local communities through grants and sponsorships. Part of that funding has gone towards AED infrastructure: some branches have installed as many as 60 defibrillators across a single district, placing them on golf courses, bowling greens, walking trails, in cafes, chemists, RSLs, CWA branches and schools. A number of these devices have already been deployed more than once to save lives.
Staying Alive Health, the exclusive distributor of the Rotaid 24/7 AED cabinet in Australia and New Zealand, has played an active role in this programme. The Rotaid 24/7 is a fully monitored, outdoor-rated cabinet that keeps AEDs publicly accessible around the clock. Its built-in 4G connectivity, automatic heating system and alarm notifications ensure that each device remains rescue-ready, reporting its own status and alerting designated responders the moment a cabinet is opened. For Bendigo Bank's network, this level of reliability is essential: a community-funded AED that is locked away, out of battery or unmonitored is an AED that cannot save a life when it matters most.
With 500 defibrillators now funded and installed, Bendigo Bank has signalled the programme is not stopping there. Local branches can consider applications for the funding, supply and installation of AEDs from sporting clubs, businesses, schools and community groups. For communities that want to take the next step towards a heart-safe environment, the process begins with a conversation at the nearest Community Bank branch.
