Lions Club Evergem and School Community Join Forces for Lifesaving AEDs in Schools

Evergem - Belgium

An inspiring initiative by Lions Club Evergem Flemish Valleys is significantly improving safety at eight schools in Evergem through the installation of public Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). This project, driven by a fruitful collaboration with the local school community, highlights the importance of preventive healthcare and education, with 430 students already trained in life-saving first aid.

In an impressive demonstration of social commitment, Lions Club Evergem Flemish Valleys has played a crucial role in increasing survival rates for cardiac arrest within the school environment. Eight schools in Evergem are now equipped with publicly accessible AED devices, which can significantly boost the chance of survival from cardiac arrest from 10% to as much as 60%.

Kenny Ketels (N-VA), Alderman of Education, Evergem

“The commitment of Lions Club Evergem to the health policy of our schools has been invaluable for many years. We hope this fruitful collaboration may continue for many years.”

The initiative extends beyond just the placement of the devices. Lions Club Evergem Flemish Valleys annually funds practical first aid lessons for all fifth-grade students in the municipal primary schools. These lessons now explicitly include how to use an AED device. Valentine Kanters, coordinating director of Evergem's education, confirms the success: "This school year, 430 Evergem students already received first aid lessons. In 6 schools, teachers also received an AED course."

This brilliant project is a prime example of how local clubs and educational institutions can collaborate to significantly improve community safety and well-being. It's an inspiring instance of commitment and proactive care for future generations.
